10 tips for hassle-free travel with a toddler:

Updated: Jul 15

Traveling with toddlers can be challenging, involving a lot of planning and packing, and can sometimes be overwhelming for parents. Here are 10 tips to make traveling with a toddler a smoother and more enjoyable experience for the entire family:

1.Keep Them Well Fed:

This is no secret—a well-fed toddler is a happy toddler, which means happy parents too. Exploring is much easier with a toddler who isn't crying out of hunger. However, during travel, it can be challenging to get kids to eat full meals due to changes in time zones, surroundings, and environments. Therefore, it's always useful to keep small, nutrient-dense snacks on hand. Fruits, yogurt, homemade laddoos, and peanut chikki are easy to carry and fuss-free, providing a good energy boost. It's also perfectly fine for them to indulge in "not so healthy" items on holiday, like ice cream, pizza in Italy, or hot dogs in Copenhagen. This allows them to experience food diversity and enjoy the vacation too. Carry a ton of snacks—this is the most important tip as it keeps them busy and happy.

You can also buy delicious local snacks from grocery stores or bakeries.

2.Ensure a Good Night's Sleep:

A good night's sleep is essential for kids to wake up refreshed and be active during a day of sightseeing. Make sure you pack whatever your child needs to sleep well, such as books, a favorite toy, or a cozy blanket. Dress them comfortably for the night. If you plan to leave early the next morning, it's a good idea to dress them in the clothes they will wear the next day, as long as they are comfortable. This saves time and helps them transition smoothly from sleep to travel.

Dress kids in comfortable, weather suitable outfits.

3.Ensure They Have Pooped Well:

You don't want to stop for bathroom breaks at the most inconvenient places, and a comfortable child makes for a smoother trip. Ensure they drink plenty of water and eat a good amount of fiber to keep their bowel movements regular. This helps avoid any discomfort and reduces the need for unexpected stops.

Travelling with toddlers is fun! Choose the right destination!

4.Playtime:

Your kids need time to do their own thing too. Exploring castles/museums might not be as interesting to a toddler as it is to you. Make time for playgrounds, free play, or activities like chasing ducks—anything you can find near the attraction you want to visit. Exploring a castle or museum becomes much easier when they've tired themselves out at a playground and fall asleep afterward.

5.Keep Them Interested:

If you want your child to enjoy trekking or exploring, you have to keep them engaged. Whether going up or down, you need to maintain their interest. Transform into "Dora the Explorer" yourself! Look for snails and slugs, wildflowers and berries, pebbles and rocks, frogs and fish—these small discoveries can be surprisingly rewarding for both you and your child. Another golden tip is to end the day with a fun activity—whether it's having ice cream, visiting a playground, or anything else that your children would enjoy. This helps cap off the day on a positive note and gives them something to look forward to the next day's adventures.

Treks, hikes and walks are all fun! infact they make up for the best family times :)

6.Bring Entertainment:

Pack a variety of small toys, books, and electronic devices with toddler-friendly apps to keep them entertained.

7. Pack Smart:

Create a checklist to ensure you pack all the essentials, such as diapers, wipes, snacks, and favorite toys. Packing cubes can help keep things organized.

You can go through our blog Essential Packing List for Traveling with Kids where you will find the all in one checklist for packing.

Choose a car with ample boot space to pack all the luggage comfortably.

8.Familiar Items:

Bring along a favorite blanket or stuffed animal to provide comfort and a sense of security.

Kids love outdoors!

9.Stroller or Carrier:

A lightweight stroller or a baby carrier can be a lifesaver for navigating airports and sightseeing.

Stroller/Baby carrier - if it is a city break then take a stroller, for hiking/trekking take a carrier.

10.Set Expectations:

Talk to your child and explain what they can expect from the day. Things that you all plan to do and visit that day. Children tend to react and behave better when they know what to expect, just like adults do. This helps them feel more prepared and engaged in the experience.
