Sri Lanka is a small island country located close to India, offering a variety of experiences. From tea plantations to stunning beaches, whale watching, and jungle safaris, there is so much to see and do!
We were particularly interested in exploring the wildlife of Sri Lanka while also enjoying a relaxing holiday.
This is a short, 6 days itinerary suitable for wildlife and nature loving families visiting Srilanka:
Day 1 - Arrive in Srilanka, and head to Kandy with a stopover at MEF (millennium elephant foundation). Spend the evening in Kandy.
Day 2 - head to Nuwara Eliya. This is the tea producing region of Srilanka and the town has old world charm. Small drive away are Ramboda falls and Bluefield tea gardens. Gregory lake is at the heart of the town and is the perfect place for an evening stroll.
Day 3 - trek the easy 10 km route in Horton Plains national park to catch the stunning view from the "world's end" view point. On the way back, visit the Ambevalley farms.
Day 4 - this is a relatively long drive to Mirissa - but the tiredness of the journey is washed away at the Mirissa beach. You can take a dip in the ocean and enjoy a candlelight meal at one of the beach side restaurants watching a beautiful sunset.
Day 5 - This day is reserved to do the most important activity of this trip - whale watching! The tour usually lasts for 5 to 7 hours and since you start early, you can expect to be back for lunch. Later you can walk up to the Hikkaduwa beach for snorkeling with turtles. You can also drive to Gale and watch sunset from the beach.
Day 6 - visit a turtle hatchery on the way to the airport to head back home. These hatcheries are supposed to be part of turtle conservation efforts. The turtle hatchery can be a super fun experience for kids with a chance to see turtle eggs and hold baby turtles and also know more about various types of turtles.
