Copenhagen with Kids: Your Essential Guide to Planning the Perfect Trip

Updated: Jul 6, 2024

I fell in love with Copenhagen! The city offers amazing playgrounds, delicious hotdogs, and cinnamon buns. It's incredibly easy to explore the city center on foot, and there are numerous attractions in and around Copenhagen that you can visit on day trips, all covered by the Copenhagen Card. You can even take a short train or bus ride to reach Malmo, Sweden!

We have visited Copenhagen thrice now, and we absolutely love this city!

The backdrop of Nyhavn is so iconic that it features in every single blog or video about copenhagen ever!

It's the perfect city break! Copenhagen offers a wealth of things to see and do, especially for families. Navigating the city is easy with the Copenhagen Card and the transport card, making public transport a breeze.

The one downside to Copenhagen that stands out for me is its expense! Everything from accommodation to food, transport, and activities can be quite pricey. However, the high cost shouldn't deter you from visiting Copenhagen. With thorough research and a few smart tricks, you can explore this beautiful city in a cost-effective manner.

Here are a few things to consider when planning a trip to Copenhagen:

1 - How to get here -

Copenhagen is well connected to all popular European cities by air, with direct flights available from Delhi and Mumbai.

We booked an EasyJet flight from Milan, which took just a couple of hours. When booking budget European airlines, it's crucial to double-check their baggage allowance and size regulations to avoid hefty extra luggage fees.

Additionally, Copenhagen enjoys excellent connectivity to other Scandinavian countries via train, bus, and cruise routes. This makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the broader Scandinavian region, as we did when planning a road trip in Norway.

2 - Visa requirement for indians-

Denmark is part of the Schengen area, so you'll need a Schengen visa to visit.

Read more about how to apply for Schengen visa on our blog - How to plan a Europe trip from India - a detailed step by step guide!

Rosenborg castle grounds are a perfect place to spend some time, have a picnic lunch , on a bright sunny day like this!

3 - Currency -

Denmark is not part of the Eurozone, so you won’t be able to use euros here. The currency used is the Danish krone. The best option is to withdraw money at the airport using a credit card before heading out. It’s important to have some cash on hand if you plan to ride the bus from the airport to your destination (the 5C bus goes from the airport to the city center) and purchase a ticket on the bus. At most other places - restaurants, convenience stores and tourist attractions, international debit and credit cards work fine.

4 - Weather -

Denmark is famous (or perhaps infamous) for its cold and dark weather, which lasts for almost eight months of the year. The best time to visit is definitely during the summer or late spring. During these seasons, you'll have maximum daylight hours to explore, and the weather will be comfortable enough for your little ones to enjoy outdoor activities. However, remember that even in late spring and early summer, evenings can get chilly, and the days can feel cold if it’s cloudy and windy. So, make sure to carry a good jacket and an umbrella, and you’ll be fine!

5 - Food -

There are so many local treats to try in Denmark, it deserves a blog post of its own! But here's some good news for Indians: there are plenty of Indian restaurants! However, they can be quite expensive. So, carry some theplas and MTR packets along, and you won’t have to worry about your Indian food cravings.

A quick and must-mention popular food item in Copenhagen is the hot dog. You will find stalls selling Hot dogs at the airport and also along the waterfront in Nyhavn. Definitely try this Danish specialty!

If you are a vegetarian/ or have special dietary requirements then do check out our blog -  How to plan a Europe trip from India - a detailed step by step guide! that provides detailed information about how to eat delicious and healthy meals while travelling in Europe, while still saving a lot of money!

Danish Hotdogs are a must try!

Definitely try coffee at the Expresso house.

6 - Accomodation -

Accommodation can be a significant part of your expenses in Copenhagen. Hotel rooms are expensive and often do not include free breakfast or cooking facilities—two very important factors when traveling with kids and managing a budget. One money-saving suggestion is to opt for Airbnb. This can significantly reduce your accommodation and food costs, while also adding to your comfort when traveling with little ones.

Additionally, staying in an Airbnb allows you to get to know Copenhagen better. The locals are very helpful and friendly, and most people speak English, so you won’t have any problems communicating.

7 - Activities :

There are tons of activities in Copenhagen for every age and taste. Whether you're enjoying a beer at a waterfront bar, exploring museums and architectural marvels, visiting the tourist-favorite Little Mermaid statue, or wandering through a butterfly garden, there's something for everyone. The city boasts impressive castles, the largest aquarium in Europe, and a zoo.

And that's not all—don't forget to visit Tivoli Gardens, the famous amusement park that delights visitors of all ages. This diversity of attractions is the true beauty of Copenhagen!

8 - Transport-

If you're in Copenhagen for less than 24 hours or don't plan to visit museums, castles, etc., the Copenhagen City Pass is the best option. The pass can be purchased from the airport for durations of 24/48/72/96/120 hours and includes access to all public transport—buses, trains, and metro—as well as transportation to and from the airport.

However, if you're planning to stay for 2 days or more and would like to visit several paid attractions during the day, then the Copenhagen Card is a better choice for you. It not only provides access to all public transport but also includes one-time entry to numerous paid attractions around the city.

9- Wifi -

Staying connected while traveling is crucial, whether for using Google Maps or keeping your loved ones informed. Fortunately, most Airbnbs in Copenhagen provide free Wi-Fi. When exploring the city, you can access free Wi-Fi at 7/11 stores, coffee shops, supermarkets, and restaurants—it's available almost everywhere! So, yes, it's possible to survive in Copenhagen without having to buy data.

However, if you feel the need to buy data anyway, Lyca is a good choice.

10- Is it safe ?

Copenhagen is a very safe city. Just take the usual precautions in crowded places: stay alert and aware of your surroundings, and you will be fine.

As a final verdict, Copenhagen offers everything you could want from a city and more! For those traveling with young kids, it's a fantastic destination—there's no way your little ones won't fall in love with this place and keep asking to return. Mine do it every other day!
