Glenorchy is a charming town just a 45-minute drive from Queenstown, known for its spectacular landscapes featured in films like The Lord of the Rings and Narnia. About 20 km from Glenorchy lies Paradise, the heart of Middle Earth.
Glenorchy offers a wide range of activities, from unique farm experiences and lagoon walkways to great hiking trails, jet boating on the Dart River, and horse riding. Even if you prefer a lazy afternoon, enjoying coffee in a cozy café, Glenorchy is the perfect place.

Drive to Glenorchy -
This spectacular 45-minute drive is a memory for a lifetime. Start early to make the most of the day. The route takes you along Lake Wakatipu, with plenty of lookouts to stop by along the way. We highly recommend stopping at Bennet's Bluff Lookout for some spectacular views of Lake Wakatipu. There is a large car park, and the lookout point is just a 10 to 15-minute walk from there. 2. Glenorchy Animal Experience -
Just a few minutes from Glenorchy town, this working farm allows kids to hand-feed and walk among various farm animals, including sheep, alpacas, llamas, goats and horses. The farm's stunning mountain backdrop adds to the experience. There is no restaurant on-site, so bring snacks or a picnic lunch to enjoy at the outdoor picnic tables.
3. The Red Shed -
Originally used by the NZ Railway Department for sorting and storing goods, the Red Shed now provides a fantastic backdrop for photos. Located next to the wharf, it’s one of the most photographed spots in New Zealand.
4. Glenorchy Waterfront Reserve -
The Glenorchy Wharf offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. It’s a popular spot for tourists and usually quite busy. Ample parking is available right at the waterfront.
5. Lagoon Walkway -
This easy 1 to 2-hour walk is perfect for families with young kids. The track passes through wetlands with amazing views of the lake and mountains, and you can spot many native birds along the way.
6. Paradise -
Located just 13 km from Glenorchy, Paradise offers a glimpse into rural New Zealand and is famous for numerous LOTR shooting locations. The road is mostly gravel from Glenorchy. On the way you will spot farmlands on both sides.
7. Mrs. Woolly's General Store -
This cozy café offers indoor and outdoor seating and serves a variety of yummy dishes. There’s also a souvenir shop to collect items to take home.
