Things to know before you travel to MAURITIUS :

Updated: Jul 22

Mauritius is a small island in Indian ocean. As young parents, sometimes you want a vacay destination , which is not too long a flight away, popular yet not too crowded, relaxing but just not all resort time, not packed with an exhausting things to do list, but yet some fun activities at your own pace - then Mauritius should be your pick.

Mauritian sunsets - totally stunning!!

VISA:

visa on arrival and free! completely hassle free.

GETTING THERE:

Air India, Air Mauritius, Vistara operate flights to Mauritius from India. It is a 6 hours flight from Mumbai. Book in advance for best deals. The airport is NOT situated in the capital city of Port louis. Cabs and rental cars are easily available at the airport.

CURRENCY:

Mauritian rupee is roughly equal to 1.8 INR. In our experience, it is better to carry some euros or dollars and exchange them for some local currency at the airport arrivals or just use ATMs to withdraw some money. Most hotels and grocery stores accept credit or foreign exchange cards. Only places that you will need to pay cash might be restaurants or some attractions that you visit.

FOOD:

Mauritius has a significant French influence. Thanks to that and growing tourism, finding comfort western food to satisfy fussy young travelers is easy. Lots of cute bakeries around. There are large grocery stores that stock all kinds of fresh and pre cooked products. Then there is local creole cuisine and also restaurants that serve Indian food. So Mauritius has considerable variety of food options to keep all tummies full and all palates happy.

some coffee eclairs? yes please!

ACCOMODATION:

There is no dearth of accommodation options to suit all budgets in Mauritius. From luxury resorts to home stays to holiday rentals- there is everything!

TRANSPORT:

Now, if you didn't self drive, did you even visit Mauritius ?! Mauritius has decent roads and like India, they drive on the left side of the road. A valid Indian driving license is acceptable for driving as a tourist. Just watch out for people waking on the side of narrow streets, but if you are used to driving on Indian roads you should not have any problem.

ATTRACTIONS:

Whether you are person who likes to pack his/her trip with adventures, or just go sightseeing or just laze on a beach watching the sun go down or all the above (just like me), then Mauritius is a treat. There is as much or as little to do as you wish!

IS IT CHILD FRIENDLY?

Yes its a great place to visit with kids! There are plenty of beautiful beaches for the kids to play! There are lots of fun activities like, dolphin watching, snorkeling, safari, museums to visit with kids .
