Exploring Copenhagen with the Copenhagen Card - Day 1

Updated: Jul 6

What is the Copenhagen city card -

The Copenhagen City Card provides access to nearly all museums, historical monuments, Tivoli, the zoo, the aquarium, and public transport, including rides from the city to the airport and selected locations outside the main city. It's available for 24/48/72/120 hours, with a handy online calculator to help you decide if it's right for you—an excellent feature in my opinion.

We find the most cost-effective option is the 48-hour card at 100 euros per person, about 18,000 INR for two people over two days. Children under 12 can enter for free when accompanied by a parent with a Copenhagen Card.

You can purchase it online and have it mailed to you or pick it up at the airport to start using right away. Alternatively, it's available at information centers in the city center.

The card's validity starts from the first use, noted on the card, for the chosen duration.

It's important to note, especially when traveling with kids, that you might not be able to fit in as much sightseeing in a day as you'd like, as breaks for the little ones are crucial for them to have fun and enjoy the experience.

Such city cards offer great value for money and ensure a hassle-free experience, which is essential when traveling with kids.

Here's a suitable Day 1 itinerary in Copenhagen, especially if you're traveling with kids:

1) Den bla panet :

On the first day of our 48-hour Copenhagen Card adventure, we headed straight to "Den Blå Planet," the aquarium. I must confess, not only my daughter but I also have a soft spot for aquariums—the underwater world never fails to fascinate me! I was so thrilled that visiting this one was a priority for me.

"The Blue Planet" aquarium opened its doors in 2013 and is a stunning example of modern architecture and design. Located near the airport, it's open every day of the week.

does this look like a builiding that houses an aquarium? looks so cool, almost like part of a sci-fi film.

The exhibits at Den Blå Planet are both impressive and educational. Highlights include watching the otters during feeding sessions, exploring the ocean exhibit with hammerhead sharks, turtles, and stingrays, and visiting small ponds where children can touch and observe starfish, crabs, and other sea creatures up close. Kids also find the small toy submarine particularly fascinating.

However, what sets Den Blå Planet apart is its unique and fun playground, focused mainly on water-related activities. There's also a small science station where older kids can collect specimens from the nearby pond and observe them under microscopes. I absolutely loved this innovative idea—it adds an educational dimension to the aquarium visit and makes it even more engaging for children.

Oh, and did I mention that the aquarium is located next to the ocean? It's the perfect spot to enjoy lunch at the restaurant or, even better, have a picnic on the benches if the weather permits!

Important update: As of July 2024, the Copenhagen Aquarium is no longer included in the Copenhagen City Card.

2) Copenhagen zoo -

Our next stop of the day was Copenhagen zoo. Take a bus to city center and then take another bus to the zoo (6a).

Copenhagen Zoo is a well-laid-out and well-managed zoo featuring animals from all around the world. It's a super fun activity for both kids and adults alike. The zoo's compact layout allows you to cover more ground in less time without getting too exhausted. Key attractions include the polar bears, seals, penguins, pandas, kangaroos, giraffes, and rhinos. It's a must-visit for animal lovers of all ages!

absolutely love "danish" play areas- this one is in copenhagen zoo, and the stalls at the back sell delicious snacks- indulge in fresh strawberries or churros - whatever your heart desires :) we enjoyed both!

Important to remember: Copenhagen Zoo is stroller-friendly, and if needed, there are free carts available for children that can be pulled along.

After these two high-energy activities packed into a day, we were exhausted. While A slept, we decided to try the coffee at Espresso House near Central Station.

The coffee was just what we needed after a long day!

Afterward, we returned to our Airbnb, enjoyed some comforting fried rice with butter chicken—yes, that's right—and called it a day!

Verdict - copenhagen card is worth getting as you will end up saving a ton of money.
