Lugano - 5 Reasons Why It Should Be on Every Swiss Itinerary

Updated: Jul 3

Lugano is located in the southern part of Switzerland, in the Italian-speaking region of the country. Situated on the shores of Lake Lugano, it contrasts with its northern counterparts by being surrounded by the Southern Alps, which are not as high as the Northern Alps. The climate here is typically warmer than in central Switzerland, and as you travel south from northern or central Switzerland, you'll notice a distinct change in vegetation.

Arriving in Lugano felt like stepping into one of those lakeside European towns you see in Bond movies!

Apart from differences in surrounding mountains, climate, vegetation, and language, other significant factors like food and the cost of accommodation also vary. We realized that food and accommodation was relatively cheaper in this part of Switzerland, compared to the more popular destinations, like Lucerne, Interlaken and Zurich. However, one thing that remains consistent is the excellent public transportation system throughout Switzerland.

Here are reasons why Lugano should be a part of every swiss trip:

1.Window into Swiss Diversity

Switzerland isn't typically known for its diversity, but few realize that it bears influences from three neighboring countries along its borders. While major tourist attractions are concentrated in the central and western parts, along the borders with Germany and France, Lugano stands close to Italy. No trip to Switzerland would be truly complete without experiencing this region—the Ticino region.

Hello, sunny Lugano! Well, relatively speaking :)

2.Cheaper Food and Accommodation - More Value for Money

Compared to the more touristy parts of Switzerland, Lugano offers better value for money when it comes to accommodation and food. Hostels provide private rooms for around 6000 INR if booked a month in advance. A slice of pizza, thanks to the close Italian influence, costs around 3 CHF and is both delicious and satisfying for one person.

If you've been spending a lot of time in the Swiss Alps, taking a day or two to relax in Lugano is a wonderful way to soak up the sun and enjoy the warmer weather.

4.Base for Exploring Lake Como

You can also use Lugano as your base and explore Lake Como, which is so popular with celebrities, using a Ticino Card provided by every hotel/hostel for the duration of your stay.

5.Lugano town is worth exploring!

Wander through the quaint streets of Lugano’s Old Town (Città Vecchia), lined with historic buildings, charming cafés, and bustling markets. Explore Lugano's art galleries and museums . Whether it’s hiking in the surrounding hills, cruising on the lake, or simply relaxing in lakeside parks, Lugano offers ample opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts too.

We had a fantastic time spending a day in Lugano before heading to Milan by train. It's definitely worth a visit and offers a very different experience compared to the rest of Switzerland!
