One of our biggest motivations to travel to Sri Lanka was whale watching. We had been wanting to go whale watching for a long time and missed the opportunity in New Zealand due to a lack of time. So when we discovered that Mirissa, along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, offers whale-watching tours, we jumped at the chance!
Here is everything you need to know about planning whale watching excursion in Sri Lanka -
When to Go Whale Watching
Whale-watching trips run throughout the year, except during the monsoon months of May and June. Even during other months, trips are carried out only if the weather is suitable. The best time for whale watching in Mirissa is from November to March, when the seas are calm, and the chances of spotting whales are highest.
Price -
The cost of whale-watching tours in Mirissa is around $50 to $60 per adult and $20 to $30 for kids aged 5 to 12 years, depending on the tour operator you choose. Kids under 5 years old are free of charge. This price usually includes pick-up from the hotel, breakfast freshly prepared in the kitchen on the boat, sea sickness tablets, and the trip to the sea. We traveled with Raja and the Whales and would highly recommend this company. Check their website for departure schedules and other important information.
Crew
The crew appeared quite knowledgeable and experienced. They gave a short introductory session about the marine life in the Indian Ocean along the Sri Lankan coasts, provided information about the chances of spotting migrating whales (orcas), and briefed us about the habitat of blue whales and the steps taken towards their conservation. A knowledgeable and trained crew goes a long way in ensuring a fun and safe whale-watching experience, so it's always good to go through online reviews before choosing the operator for your excursion.
What to Expect
The trip starts at sunrise, around 6 AM, but you need to report to the office at around 5:30 AM. After our booking was confirmed, we were informed that we would be picked up from our hotel at around 5 AM, with the charges included in the total price.
At the office, once the formalities are done, you take a short walk to the harbor to board the boat. It's a double-decker boat with a toilet and decent seating arrangements. We suggest sitting on the top floor for a better view.
When you board, the crew provides life jackets and motion sickness medicine that you can take in case you feel sick during the initial rough ride into the sea.
After a briefing about safety, the whales and their habitat, and what to expect from the trip, they provide a delicious breakfast of a fruit platter and eggs made to order with some bread.
About an hour and a half into the trip, the spotting begins. Raja and the whales, do not take the boats very near to the whales when they are spotted, so as to not disturb the majestic creature. Not just blue whales, but there's a good chance to see dolphins and turtles too.
Usually, the trip lasts about 6 to 7 hours, making it a great half-day adventure.
Things to Remember While Traveling with Kids
They provide life jackets for toddlers too.
The ride can get very rough, so plan accordingly.
Bring plenty of fluids and snacks for toddlers.
Dress kids in comfortable clothes and carry a sweatshirt in case it gets windy and cool.
Don't forget to carry sunscreen.
Overall, its a fabulous experience, to see the largest animal on earth!! highly recommended.
