A short ride away from the Postojna cave is the largest cave castle of the world – Predjama castle. The castle looks right out of a fairy tale! It can be visited in continuation with Postojna cave as a day trip from Ljubljana.
Set against the backdrop of mighty mountain and intercommunicating caves, the 800 year old castle was very cunningly constructed to survive seige and also to provide escape to its inhabitants if needed.
The audio guide is included in the ticket charge. One of the best audio guide that I have experienced – it is informative, precise and extremely entertaining. Gives a close peek into the lives of the people from that era.
The tour takes you around the castle's several rooms – kitchen, bedroom, dinning room, torture room, arms room and also to the back of the castle to a well shielded emergency exit through the caves.
Erasmus, the most famous owner of the castle, survived a long seige in the castle till he was betrayed by his own servant and killed by a cannon shot in his own lavatory.
How to reach:
Driving to the castle is the fastest way to reach the castle.
By the time you finish the tour of the caves and castle , you will be famished! A good place to eat a meal and rest the tired feet is a restaurant right at the entrance of the cave – Gostilna pozar B.
Try their turkey with mushroom sauce or gnocchi in mushroom sauce (vegetarian option) and gulp it down with some Lasko (not if you are going to be driving).
We tried their homemade berry ice-cream and vanilla ice-cream with pumpkin seed oil – oh so yumm!
Important to remember:
Predjama castle can be a day trip from Ljubljana and can be combined with a visit to the Postojna caves. Combined ticket can be purchased.
You may also plan to include a visit to Piran on the same day if you start early.
Carry snacks and water along.
