VIENNA - our first HOSTEL experience.

Updated: Sep 6, 2023

Schonbrunn palace garden

Vienna is a beautiful city, bursting with history and architecture at every turn. But it is also an expensive city. The first step to cut costs in any city is to choose cheaper accommodation that does not make you compromise on safety, comfort and convenience and yet is easy on the pocket.

City of Vienna

We chose to stay at Hostel Ruthensteiner in Vienna for our first hostel experience. If you, like me, thought that hostels were for solo travelers and not for families with kids, you must read on -

summary of what to expect at this hostel

(This is not a sponsored blog. We chose and paid for our accommodation ourselves .This blog is to help travelers have similar experience without having the hassle of doing the research! )

1) LOCATION-

  • The hostel is located at a 10 to 15 minutes walking distance from the Westbahnof station.

  • From the main station, you can either take public transport or take a taxi to the Hostel (costs around 12 euros) - economical with kids or when travelling as a group, plus saves time and is very convenient.

  • From the airport, take 'Airport lines' bus that drops at the Westbahnof station for 8 euros per person and then walk your way to the hostel.

2) RECEPTION -

The staff at the reception is available 24 hours to help you. They are very friendly and professional, are well informed, suggest the best places to visit and eat . Check-in is smooth and quick.

3) ROOMS -

Many types of rooms are available to suit your requirements - dorms, private rooms with shared bathrooms /with attached bathroom. Bathrooms and toilets are always clean. Carry your toiletries though.

4) KITCHEN -

The most important facility that a hostel provides to a budget traveler is a community kitchen. It not just helps you save a few bucks, but also presents an opportunity to interact with other travelers and share a meal. There is an in-house bar near the common seating area which is the place for music and good times every evening.

5) LOCKERS-

The hostel provides lockers to store your luggage even after check out! So that you can go exploring that day hassle free for a deposit of 2 euros.

6) FAMILY FRIENDLY LOCATION -

The place is great for families, considering its proximity to Schonbrunn palace, gardens and zoo. Also the street just behind the hostel has large number of restaurants/cuisines and a few grocery stores. Also there is a very good play ground on the way to Schonbrunn palace.

7) BREAKFAST -

The hostel provides all you can eat breakfast for 7 euros. It includes, fruits, breads , cereals, milk, coffee, and 'make on your own' waffles. Which is a good deal I think as it lets you start your day early and with delicious waffles that you can brag about! Of course you can also use the kitchen to cook your own breakfast.

8) GARDEN-

There is a small backyard garden, so that you can enjoy outdoors when not too cold.

We loved or stay at Hostel Ruthensteiner during our short Vienna visit.

It is clean, family friendly place located close to Schonbrunn palace and zoo and is managed by friendly, professional staff.

We would love to stay there again.
